LinkedIn messaging is important, like REALLYYYY important for B2B lead generation from LinkedIn.
And I;m not here to lie, but it is a little harder when there’s a limit placed on it.
But no worries, that’s what we’re here to talk about today:
What are LinkedIn message character limits, and how you can make the most out of them to get the best results.
I’ll also share some insider insights on how to craft a message that —
☝🏼Has everything that’s important (and relevant), and
✌🏼Is within the character limit.
If you’re ready, let’s begin!
What are LinkedIn’s messaging character limits?
📲Direct messages to 1st-degree connections — 3000 characters
📲Connection request message — 300 characters
📲InMails (subject line) to non-connections — 200 characters
📲InMails (message body) to non-connections — 1900 characters
📲Sponsored InMail (subject line) — 60 characters
📲Sponsored InMail (message body) — 1500 characters
📲Group messages — 2000 characters
Mind you, these are CHARACTER limits, not WORD limits.
Why do these limits exist?
Messaging limits on LinkedIn are for your own good.
✅They exist to improve the overall user experience on LinkedIn.
✅They make sure you’re not sending irrelevant messages to strangers and spamming them.
✅Short messages are also easier and quicker to read and decide whether somebody wants to talk to you further.
Plus, there’s also a limit to how many LinkedIn messages you can send in a day, and it highly depends on the maturity of your account.
So, are these numbers enough to get you leads from LinkedIn?
Short answer: Yes.
You can also bypass this number easily — here’s how.
Long answer is gonna be some steps 🥸
How to write a LinkedIn message to get maximum replies?
Didn’t think you needed a guide on how to write a message?
Well, when you have limited words and messages, you kinda do..
This is where I’ll teach you how to write a message no matter the character limit; so your message has all the important info.
1. Personalization
“Hey, I saw your recent post, and it caught my attention..”
Vs.
“Hey [name: Jack], I saw your recent post about [topic: marketing strategies], and it caught my attention..”
See the difference for yourself.
I mean, it’s obvious, right?
It instantly shows that you’re serious and spent time researching before texting them.
Also, please stop using people’s name, company name, job title, for personalizing messages, it’s not enough.
You need to dig in more and spend some time on their profile to see what they’re interested in currently.
2. Introduction
Don’t forget to mention who you are and why you’re reaching out to them.
You’re probably reaching out to them for the first time if they aren’t already connected to you on LinkedIn.
So your primary focus should be on relevance — Why should they care?
How does your message relate to their professional interests or needs?
When you provide a clear context, the recipient understands your purpose without needing to read further for clarity.
3. Communication
Why?
➡️You’ve got limited space, and
➡️People love to know what’s in it for them.
When you provide value early on in your message, people are more likely to care and engage.
Instead of selling your product and explaining your need, focus on what you can offer that will benefit you both.
Even better if you can find a pain point and offer a solution to their problem.
4. Credibility
Numbers add credibility and proof to your message.
Include specific numbers or metrics that show your achievements or the potential benefits of collaborating with you.
This could be revenue growth, cost savings, efficiency improvements, or any other quantifiable results relevant to the recipient.
People are more likely to trust and respond to data-driven claims.
Your response rates will also shoot up 10x automatically without making any major changes to your messaging strategy.
5. Action
Alright, so they read your message, and now they’re interested.
But you didn’t tell them what to do next..
And now they’re just browsing your website, not knowing what to do.
You’ve just missed out on a potential lead!
To avoid this, end your message with a quick, simple, and actionable step.
It could be a sign-up, a quick call, a trial, anything.
But make it clear.
And while we’re at it — making it clear doesn’t mean putting pressure on someone to take an action.
Let them decide if they want to or not.
And btw, if you need help writing CTAs, here’s your help.
This way, even if you get to send 50-100 messages per day, you know you’re sending quality content that will have a higher response rate than generic ones.

Just for the record: I’m writing these on the 25th of December.
Never thought that I would spend my holidays writing (sample) personalized messages :’)
And if you don’t wanna end up like me (trust me you don’t)... know what could help?
LinkedIn outreach automation!
How to automate outreach on LinkedIn?
Let’s first talk about the why..
There are different character limits for different categories — right?
Now, typing a message keeping in mind the character limit, personalization, CTA, follow-ups, and everything else..
Plus, when you need to generate leads from LinkedIn in bulk — you need to send out these messages in bulk.
And then, personalize, follow-up, and track in bulk.
And ofc, do all of it within the character limits.
I hope your math is mathing like mine.
I’d wanna avoid all of this hassle.
And that’s where automated LinkedIn outreach makes its wild card entry!
You can use tools like SalesRobot to automate your LinkedIn outreach, and it will —
1️⃣Play by LinkedIn’s rules,
2️⃣Follow the how-to-write-a-message checklist step-by-step,
3️⃣And follow-up with your prospects regularly on autopilot.
It can even send emails between LinkedIn campaigns to remind them they missed your message.
Let’s go through a series of quick steps to see how to do so —
✅Go to SalesRobot and sign up for the free trial.
✅When you’re logged in, go to the campaigns page and click on ‘Create Campaign.’
✅Now, if you want to create and edit a campaign yourself, you can click on ‘I’m an advanced user’ and proceed.
And if you want AI to create your campaign, click on ‘Create a campaign with SalesGPT.’
✅Next, you’ll get multiple options to import LinkedIn profiles to your campaign.
The AI lookalike feature will specifically help you if you struggle finding the ICP and are fed up of LinkedIn Sales Navigator’s results.
It can locate some great prospects based on what your best customers look like so you are targeting a very specific audience.
✅Once you share the link, SalesRobot will start importing their profiles, and you’ll be able to configure your campaign.
And the best part?
You can include LinkedIn + Email in the same sequence.
✅If you don’t want to write messages yourself, SalesRobot will do that for you.
And if you already have a template ready, you can click on the ‘Edit’ icon beside the sequence and add it there, and SalesRobot will let you know the probable response rate.
Also, if you exceed the character limit, it’ll let you know that too!
And once your campaign starts, all you need to do is close deals with the leads SalesRobot sends your way; on autopilot ofc!
If ‘autopilot’ is scaring you, don’t worry, SalesRobot has a built-in safe mode that makes it behave like a human on LinkedIn to keep your account safe.
Conclusion — Can I bypass these limits?
Yes, and no.
There are workarounds to bypass the daily message-sending limits and connection requests, but with character limits, you can’t.
What you can do is add some media — like images, documents, or files to your texts if you’ve got a really long story to tell, which will eventually save you some character space.
Other than that, you just gotta get creative with your words a little and see what’s working for you.
Anyway, I’ve shared 5 great tips that can help you write a good message on LinkedIn without letting the character limits bother you, and if it still feels like a struggle or doesn’t work out, leave it up to SalesRobot!
It’s free for 14-days; no credit card needed, so, you know, no harm in trying!😉
Hope this helps,
Take care!
